Richard Durbin was born on November 21, 1944 in East St. Louis, Illinois. He was born to William Durbin and Anna Kutkin.

He has been married for 49 years to Loretta Schaefer Durbin. He has three children; Chirstine Durbin, Jennifer Durbin, and Paul Durbin.

He graduated from Assumption High in East St. Louis in 1962. He then earned a bachelor's degree from the School of Foreign Service at Georgetown in 1966. He earned a J.D, a Juris degree, Georgetown University Law Center in 1969.
Current and Previous Offices
When Durbin was still in college he was an intern for Senator Paul Douglas. After earning his law degree, he became the legal counsel to Lieutenant Governor Paul Simon from 1969-1972. He then became the legal counsel to the Illinois State Judiciary Committee from 1972-1982. In 1982 Durbin won the Democratic nomination to become the Representative for the 20th Congressional District, which was later redrawn. Durbin was re-elected 6 times during his time in the House of Representatives. He then became the senator for the state of Illinois in 1996, and has been re-elected a total of three times. He was the Senate Majority Whip from 2007-2015. He is now the Senate Minority Whip and has been since 2015.
